Greg Justus: color, the visual vitamin

May/June 2010: The Flying Joe Coffeehouse
2130 Preston Pwy (Levis Commons) Perrysburg, OH

profile pic"Every artist has different motivational and inspirational reasons for what they do. Mine is simple: a love of color, a need for color, and passion for color. Color to me is one of the most stimulating things surrounding us in life, a visual energy.

Whether it’s a beautiful sunset, ocean blue-greens in coral reef waters, or the crisp, clean colors in a Van Gogh painting, color moves us whether we realize it or not. Color has an enormous emotional quality to it and can have psychological impact on our mood. Why do people get down in the winter months? Gray skies, white snow, trees without leaves - color has taken time off. We long for blue skies, green grass, and large floral palettes to view everywhere we go. We long for color!

Another aspect of my artwork is inspired by the Abstract Expressionistic idea of using paint as the subject matter. I tend to incorporate paint splatters, pools of paint, and squeeze lines of paint right out of the tube in my work. The thick lines of paint used in some of my paintings create the temptation to touch those wonderful, shiny, pools of color and ignore the painting as a whole. Nothing pleases me more than to see a viewer desperately wanting to touch the thick paint adhered to the canvas. Personally, I say touch the paint if you want! (With clean hands of course!) Touching the painting creates more of a connection between viewer and the artwork.

What is the glue holding all these ideas together? You guessed it, color. Life is full of color, whether it’s in a painting or in living organisms. Take the time to savor color; it’s the perfect visual vitamin."
