Perrysburg has been defined by a monumental sculpture of Commodore Perry since 1937.
This temporary outdoor sculpture exhibit celebrates the symbol of our city and the impact public art has on the urban landscape. Thirteen sculptures are on exhibit along the Maumee River in historic downtown Perrysburg; a quaint area to shop or stop for a bite to eat. The exhibition will be on display until August 2009 creating visual stimulation throughout all the seasons of the year.
Enjoy the many contrasts and diversity contained within the exhibit which spans from Riverside to Hood Park. The sculptures are by renowned as well as emerging artists. Compare the striking differences in sculpture materials , and the diversity of sculptures ranging from figurative to architectural.
It's all on Front Street and can be viewed on foot, in a car or by boat.
All the sculptures displayed in "Art on the River" are for sale. The commission generated from the sales will benefit the Perrysburg Area Arts Council's Public Art Fund.
The winners of the Perrysburg Area Arts Council's "Art on the River" photo contest have been announced and are Stu Kerr with 1st and 2nd place. See 1st place photo and Janet Smith with 3rd. Richard Hamilton, a Perrysburg photographer, served as the juror for the competition. Hamilton chose these three photographs based on their overall composition and visually enticing nature. The subject of both of Kerr's photographs was "The Ballerina" by Barry W. Johnston.
The first place image is a compelling composition with surprisingly deep colors and a dark, ominous air. Kerr's second image also emits a disturbing, morose quality. Janet Smith's subject was "Untitled" by Michael Romanin. Smith's photo captures the sculpture in a picturesque scene of snow-covered homes across the river at late sunset.
The objective of the competition was to urge residents to create original and unique photographs of the 13 "Art on the River" sculptures in their winter beauty.
